“Kids will be the kind of kids who do whatever they want until they learn that it’s not okay. Samie Hardman said, “I think that’s where those hard conversations come from.” Her husband added that Drayke was too afraid of what his attacker would do to him to come forward and tell them what was going on.
The couple said they were telling Drayke’s story to bring attention to how awful playground bullying is. They also promoted a social media hashtag called #doitfordrayke to encourage people to be kind to each other and pay kindness forward whenever they can.
A family friend has set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for Drayke’s funeral and memorial service. Utah Jazz basketball players Donovan Mitchell, Joe Ingles, and Rudy Gobert have already donated after hearing about the tragedy on Twitter from Andy Hardman, who told them how much his late son loved the team.
“Our sweet 12-year-old baby boy tried to kill himself last night and died this morning,” he wrote. “He loves the Utah Jazz more than anyone. Thank you for giving him a reason to smile.”

Ms. Hardman wrote about her loss on Instagram: “This is the result of bullying. My handsome boy was fighting a battle I couldn’t save him from.” It’s real, it’s quiet, and as a parent, there’s nothing you can do to make this deep pain go away. There are no signs. Only hurtful words from other people got OUR Drayke taken away from this cruel place.
“How does a 12-year-old who knows that everyone loves him so much think that life is so hard that he needs to end it?”
She said, “My heart is broken, and I don’t know how to fix it or if I ever will. But in honor of my favorite guy, I will spend every minute teaching kindness.” His goal was to teach kindness and love, which he did by taking anyone in as a friend so that they would have one. When you joined Drayke’s tribe, you were always a part of it.
“I can’t even begin to say how grateful I am for my friends and family, for all the calls, texts, and messages. I do try to answer, but right now I don’t know how. I’ll tell you to hold your babies tight. Show them how to live and love with all they have. Do it for Rayke and teach kindness.”

Drayke was born to heal the world. From the moment he opened those big blue eyes until the day he took his last breath, he loved with everything he had. He liked making people laugh, and he always wanted them to have someone to talk to. If you were Drayke’s friend, you would always be his friend.
He was our old soul who didn’t want to get any younger. He wanted to always be a child.
This boy knew love every day of his life. He was my world, his dad’s world, his sister’s world, and all of our worlds. To know Drayke was to love him. He lit a fire in people, and his wit and baby blue eyes made everyone fall in love with him. He is our boy, the one person who would just stop and give us a hug or say “I love you” a million times a day. Drayke was so into basketball and jazz that it would be an understatement to say he was obsessed. He always told his dad and sisters that he was going to be the shortest NBA star so he could team up with D. Mitchell and take over basketball.
