Their story is one of courage, determination, and a strong will to fight for what is right.
Usha Narayane’s Background and Bravery
- Usha Narayane was born to Madhukar and Alka Narayane in a slum dwelling in Kasturba Nagar, where education was a rare commodity. Despite this, Usha’s parents made sure that their five children received a college education.
- Usha herself had a diploma in hotel management and was aiming for a managerial job in Punjab when she returned home for a short break.
- It was during this time that Usha’s neighbor, Akku, attacked their next-door neighbors. Although Akku warned Usha not to go to the police, she did anyway.
- This action led to Akku and 40 other men surrounding Usha’s home on August 1, 2004. Akku threatened to splash acid on Usha’s face and threatened to rape and kill her.
- Usha believed that Akku targeted her because she had spoken out against him, saying that he raped only poor people whom he thought wouldn’t be listened to.
- Despite barricading the door and calling the police, they did not arrive in time. Usha then grabbed a gas cylinder and threatened to blow everything up, including herself and Akku’s accomplices.
- This action caused Akku and his men to leave the premises, and the locals finally united against him, eventually demolishing his house.
- Akku went to the police on August 7, 2004, and a bail hearing was set a week later.
- Hundreds of women showed up in the courtroom, and after Akku threatened one of them, chaos erupted, and a mob consisting mainly of women and children stabbed him over 70 times and cut off his penis.
Savita Wanjari’s Account of the Incident
Savita Wanjari was a resident of Kasturba Nagar who also witnessed the incident. She recalls going to the courthouse and being arrested the following day. She claimed that she could not describe the incident in detail because it was too graphic.
Savita was one of the five women initially arrested for the murder, but they were soon released amidst intense protests. Hundreds of other women from the slum also claimed to have participated in the murder.
Usha’s and Savita’s Struggles
Usha and Savita both faced their share of struggles after the incident. Usha was accused of the murder, but she claimed to have been in the slum at the time of the incident.
She was eventually granted bail but claimed to have been harassed by the police. On the other hand, Savita returned home to a hero’s welcome, with the people of the slum feeding her and the other women sweets.
Usha Narayane and Savita Wanjari’s story is a remarkable one. Their bravery and determination to fight against injustice are awe-inspiring.

While the series has received praise for shedding light on the plight of marginalized communities in India and the flaws in the country’s justice system, it has also faced criticism for glorifying vigilantism and portraying the women as heroes.

However, the series’ creators have defended their portrayal of the incident, stating that it is a reflection of the reality faced by many women in India who are forced to take matters into their own hands when the legal system fails to protect them.
