He was given the role of managing Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on 9 February 2006. Under his leadership, UAE has established diplomatic relations with several countries across the world. On February 9, 2006, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan was given the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for the United Arab Emirates.

The United Arab Emirates has seen a rapid expansion of its diplomatic relations with countries in Latin America, the South Pacific, Sub-Saharan Africa, and East Asia during his tenure as Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
