Political Career

Samy Vellu’s political career began when he and Govindaraj joined the Batu Caves MIC branch in 1959, when he was 23 years old. After five years, he was put in charge of the party and made a member of the Selangor MIC committee. He got a lot of attention when he climbed up the flagpole at the Indonesian embassy, took down the flag, and set it on fire. He was found guilty in court and given an RM2 fine. From September 1974 to March 2008, he served as the MP for Sungai Siput for eight terms. He was the Deputy Minister of Local Government and Housing from 1978 to 1979. Personal Life

Vellu was born in Kluang, Johor, and he comes from India. He had a son with his wife, Indrani Samy Vellu. He was a chartered architect and a member of both the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Malaysian Institute of Architects.
