Career

Geeta Dutt, Shamshad Begum, and Lata Mangeshkar were some of the best playback singers in the early 1960s. They sang most of the songs for the female leads and the big films. Asha used to get the jobs that other singers didn’t want to do, like singing for bad girls and vamps or in low-budget movies. In the 1950s, she sang more songs for Hindi movies than most playback singers. Most of them were in B- or C-grade movies with low budgets. Most of her early songs, which were written by A. R. Qureshi, Sajjad Hussain, and Ghulam Mohammed, did not do well. She got some attention when she sang in Sajjad Hussain’s 1952 film Sangdil. So, Bimal Roy, the director of the movie Parineeta, gave her a chance to sing in it (1953). Raj Kapoor hired her to sing “Nanhe Munne Bachche” with Mohammed Rafi in the 1954 movie Boot Polish, which was a hit.

In C.I.D., O. P. Nayyar gave Asha a break (1956). She had her first big break in B. R. Chopra’s Naya Daur (1957), which he also wrote the music for. The songs “Maang Ke Saath Tumhara,” “Saathi Haath Badhana,” and “Uden Jab Jab Zulfein Teri” that she sang with Rafi and that were written by Sahir Ludhianvi brought her fame. It was the first time she sang all of the songs for the main actress in a movie. Chopra asked her to be in some of his later movies, like Gumrah (1963), Waqt (1965), Hamraaz (1967), Aadmi Aur Insaan (1966), and Dhund (1971). (1973). The next time Nayyar worked with Bhosle, they also did well. She became known over time, and composers like Sachin Dev Burman and Ravi started to support her. In the 1970s, Bhosle and Nayyar stopped working together and stopped being friends.

In 1966, Bhosle’s duets on one of R.D. Burman’s first movie soundtracks, for the film Teesri Manzil, were praised by the public. When she first heard the “Aaja Aaja” dance number, she reportedly thought she couldn’t sing this “Westernized” tune. Burman offered to change the music, but she didn’t take him up on it. After ten days of practicing, she finished the song. “Aaja Aaja” and “O Haseena Zulfonwali” and “O Mere Sona Re,” which were all duets with Rafi, became popular. Shammi Kapoor, who played the main character in the movie, was once quoted as saying, “If Mohammad Rafi hadn’t sung for me, I would have hired Asha Bhosle.” When Bhosle and Burman worked together, they had a lot of hits and got married. During the 1960s and 1970s, she was the voice of Helen, a dancer and actress in Hindi films who was pictured in the song “O Haseena Zulfon Wali.” People say that Helen would go to her recording sessions so she could get a better feel for the song and plan her dance moves around it. “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja” (from “Caravan”) and “Yeh Mera Dil” (from “Don”) are two of their other popular songs.

By the 1980s, Bhosle was known as a “cabaret singer” and a “pop crooner,” even though she was highly regarded for her skills and versatility. In the 1981 movie Umrao Jaan, which starred Rekha, she sang a few ghazals, such as “Dil Cheez Kya Hai,” “In Aankhon Ki Masti Ke,” “Yeh Kya Jagah Hai Doston,” and “Justuju Jiski Thi.” Khayyam, who was in charge of the music for the movie, dropped her pitch by half a note. Bhosle was surprised that she could sing in so many different ways. Because of the ghazals, she won her first National Film Award. A few years later, the song “Mera Kuchh Saamaan” from Ijaazat won her another National Award (1987).

In 1995, Bhosle, who was 62 years old at the time, sang in the movie Rangeela for the actress Urmila Matondkar. Songs like “Tanha Tanha” and “Rangeela Re” were written by music director A. R. Rahman and sung by her on the soundtrack. Rahman would go on to record more songs with her. Several of Bhosle’s songs were big hits in the 2000s, including “Radha Kaise Na Jale” from Lagaan (2001), “Kambakht Ishq” from Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya (2001), “Yeh Lamha” from Filhaal (2002), and “Lucky Lips” from Lucky (2005). The Very Best of Asha Bhosle, The Queen of Bollywood came out in October 2004. It is a collection of songs that Bhosle recorded between 1966 and 2003 for Hindi language albums and movies.

In 2012 she judged Sur Kshetra.

At the age of 79, Bhosle made her film debut in the lead role of Mai in 2013. Bhosle played the part of a 65-year-old mother with Alzheimer’s disease whose children leave her. She also did well as an actress, which was praised by critics.
